Bibles in MENA

According to local leaders, Bibles have not entered a specific closed North African country since 2008. Fear of government oppression restricts local believers from accessing Scripture on their phones. Despite these restrictions, a member of the Biglife network was able to obtain a significant number of Bibles, which were hidden in a private location about 16 kilometers from the capital.

After receiving the location, a Biglife leader and two trusted believers hired six camels for fifteen days, purchased two tons of charcoal and several plastic bags, and built a tent over the site. They remained there for two weeks.

Each night, they loaded one camel with the specific quantity of Bibles designated for a local gathering and traveled late at night, passing beyond the capital to a predetermined meeting place. The deliveries were normally completed between five and six o’clock in the morning.

One night, while traveling through an area of sand dunes just before dawn, the team was carrying a load of Bibles on two camels, along with another load of charcoal for camouflage. When a customs vehicle appeared behind them, the leader immediately turned the camel and released the load of Bibles, allowing the books to roll with the sand into the dune until they disappeared.

The three men then continued toward the customs vehicle, which had six officers inside. The leader prayed silently and encouraged the other two men to remain calm, knowing that any suspicious behavior could increase suspicion. The customs officers questioned them about where they had come from, and the leader explained that they had been sleeping near a nearby village and were traveling toward another village but had lost their way among the sand dunes while trying to shorten the distance before sunrise.

The commander was not completely convinced and ordered the cargo to be searched, suspecting that it might contain drugs or weapons. During the conversation, the leader tried to ease the tension by telling jokes, which caused some of the soldiers to laugh.

The commander insisted on the inspection, so the leader asked him to empty the charcoal onto the ground so that it could be collected later. After the officers searched for the charcoal with their feet and found nothing, the commander apologized and said that it was their duty. The leader thanked them for their vigilance in protecting the people and explained that he only wanted to make their work easier. The commander then said that they trusted them and would not search for them again, and the officers left the place to have breakfast.

By God’s grace, the team was able to deliver the Bibles to more than 110 gatherings across the country.
